AMPYR is developing the Swallow Tail Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near the Bannaby substation in NSW, designed to store energy for use during peak times.
The project obtained SEARS in 2024 and, following the completion of planning studies, will seek planning consent from the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to start construction in late 2026.
In May 2026, The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) assessed the project as not a controlled action under the EPBC Act. The Referral Decision can be found here.

Location
Swallow Tail BESS is located on Gundungurra Country five kilometres east of Bannaby and 20 kilometres from Taralga.
The project is named after the nearby Swallow Tail Pass on the Tarlo River. The project will connect to the Bannaby substation, which is a key point on TransGrid’s 330kV transmission network connecting renewable energy resources from southern NSW to electricity consumers across NSW and beyond.
